This page is intended for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a Quebec institution recognised by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. You’ll find all the information you need to apply to the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec.
You’re about to embark on a great adventure. To apply to the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, all you need to do is complete 60 credits of your bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution in Quebec. You can also apply after graduation.
1. Apply for Admission
Complete your application online and pay the required fees. It’s quick and easy.
2. Register to the Professional Admission Program
Once admitted, you can register for the Professional Admission Program. You will then be designated as a Candidate to the Engineering Profession (CEP). You will have 5 years to complete the 3 components of the program.
3. Obtain Your Engineering Permit
Once you have successfully completed all three components of the program, including the professional exam, your file will be reviewed by the Admission to Practice Committee. Once approved, you will receive your permit and be invited to register with the OIQ to use the title Engineer.
The Professional Admission Program is the heart of the process of becoming a professional engineer. During this time, you will learn to practice engineering with professionalism. You can apply to the OIQ and enroll in this program once you have completed 60 credits of your undergraduate engineering degree, or after graduation.
It consists of 3 components: practical, theoretical and linguistic, to be completed within a maximum of 5 years. Only the theoretical component is available to candidates who have accumulated 60 credits by the time they receive their diploma.
Throughout the program, you will be a “candidate to the engineering profession” or its abbreviation “CEP”, a recognized professional title. You will not be able to use the title “Engineer” until you have obtained your permit to practice and are registered on the OIQ’s roll.
For a better understanding of the practical component and evaluation of competencies in engineering work experience or internships, consult the Guide pour les CPI et superviseurs.
Supervision : Before beginning each experience, be sure to indicate the name of your supervisor in your portal. The OIQ will verify this person’s eligibility and the relevance of the experience as soon as it is declared. To supervise you, this person must meet certain conditions. To find out more about the supervisor’s role, visit the page dedicated to supervisors (in french): page dédiée aux superviseurs.
For graduates with a bachelor’s degree in engineering (or more than 60 credits) from an accredited educational institution in Quebec, the process is relatively straightforward.
Gather the required documents, starting with your school’s official transcript.
Create a profile, upload your documents and consult the list of fees to make your payment.
For Quebec graduates, processing the application generally takes 2 to 4 weeks.
Provide an official transcript for each degree in support of your application. The documents must be sent directly from your educational institution to the OIQ. It is recommended that you begin with this step as it may take some time to obtain transcripts.
Digital copy of your birth certificate or passport. Driver’s licenses and health insurance cards are not accepted.
A fee is required to process your application and registration for the Profession Admission Program and its theoretical component. Processing will begin after payment is received and a complete application is submitted. Please see the fee schedule for details.
New graduates are eligible for a 50% discount on the Profession Admission Program registration fee if they register within 6 months of graduation or after completing 60 credits of their Bachelor of Engineering degree.
For the duration of the Profession Admission Program, you must renew your registration annually, in March of each year. This fee does not apply to undergraduate students. It is only required once you have received your Bachelor of Engineering degree.

“CEP” is the title given to a candidate before he or she is granted an engineering permit. During the professional admission program, you’ll be assessed on 3 levels: practical, theoretical and language.
You’ll acquire key skills through hands-on experience supervised by an engineer. You’ll also have to complete an online theory course, and pass a professional exam. And finally, you’ll have to demonstrate your knowledge of the French language.
The short answer? Between 2 and 5 years. You’ll need to acquire key skills during at least 24 months of practice under the supervision of an experienced engineer. And you’ll have up to 5 years to complete the program, after which you can replace “CEP” with “ENG”!
If you are eligible, all you have to do is gather the necessary documents, complete your application and the adventure begins.
Already curious about what’s next? That’s a good sign. When it comes to costs, engineers have two financial obligations towards the OIQ: paying the annual dues and registration on the roll. These two obligations are often fulfilled at the same time, in the weeks before March 31st of each year. Fees may fluctuate from year to year and vary according to the engineer’s status and practice. For more details, consult our fee schedule.
